Kippford History

Kippford lifeboat station launched in 1966...

In 1966, an inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established at Kippford in May with a D class lifeboat. This was operational only during the summer months.

The ILB was kept in a small boathouse at the top of a narrow lane leading down to the beach.

In 1977, a replacement boathouse was built by the lifeboat crew and, in 1999, the station became operational all year round.

In 2000,  the D class lifeboat, D-553 David Whitehead, was placed on service on July 6th and, five years later, on July 18th, HRH The Duke of Kent, President of the RNLI, was given a tour of Kippford lifeboat station, meeting volunteer crew members and fundraisers.

In November 2009, HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, officially launched D-553's replacement boat. The D???
is the latest D Class design which was first introduced in 2003.
